An HBCU quarterback gave ESPN plenty to talk about Saturday night. Morgan State’s Cameron Edge earned a helmet sticker from analyst Joey Galloway on College Football Final after delivering a 444-yard breakout in the Bears’ dramatic 38-35 victory over Villanova.
Galloway praised Edge’s performance, Morgan State’s disciplined execution, and the offensive line that gave its quarterback room to work. The Bears delivered a statement win, and their quarterback got his flowers on national television.
Edge completed 31 of 40 passes, threw three touchdowns, and added two more on the ground. His final rushing score put Morgan State ahead with just 36 seconds remaining.
Five touchdowns. A place in the school record book. And some ESPN love for a quarterback who spent years waiting for his opportunity.
A breakout that earned ESPN’s attention
Edge’s afternoon was about more than piling up passing yards.
With Morgan State trailing late, he led the Bears into scoring position and finished the possession himself. Villanova still had a chance to answer, but a missed 47-yard field goal sealed the victory.
Edge’s 444 passing yards rank third in Morgan State history, behind LeJominick Washington’s 515 in 2001 and Orlando Persell’s 484 in 1992. He completed 77.5 percent of his attempts while accounting for all five Bears touchdowns.
He also had help. Justin Perry caught six passes for 152 yards, while Keith Jenkins Jr. added eight receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown. Together, they helped Edge turn a historic passing day into a win.
Morgan State improved to 4-1, its best start since 2009. Coming one week after a victory over crosstown opponent Towson, the result gave the Bears another reason to believe their early success has staying power.
From four-star prospect to HBCU playmaker
The talent was there long before the ESPN sticker. The playing time took longer to arrive.
At Smyrna High School in Delaware, Edge was a four-star quarterback and the state’s top-ranked prospect. He reclassified from the 2023 recruiting class to 2022, graduating early to begin his college career at Maryland.
However, a crowded quarterback room limited his opportunities. Edge spent three seasons with the Terrapins and appeared in just four games. One memorable opportunity came in the 2023 Music City Bowl, where he threw his first career touchdown pass against Auburn.
He then transferred to Eastern Michigan for the 2025 season but did not see game action.
Morgan State offered his next opening.
Head coach Damon Wilson named Edge the starter in August after a competitive preseason battle. The Bears also named him a team captain, reflecting the trust he built through offseason workouts and preparation.
Wilson pointed to Edge’s experience, football knowledge, and growing leadership when announcing the decision. After four college seasons spent largely outside the spotlight, Edge finally had an offense to lead.
Now, that opportunity is producing results.

Why the ESPN helmet sticker matters
For HBCU football, this kind of recognition carries weight beyond one player’s stat line.
A helmet sticker on ESPN’s national recap show gives viewers another reason to pay attention to a program outside the usual major-conference conversation. Edge’s performance brought Morgan State into that discussion through what happened on the field.
Precedent exists, but it remains an uncommon moment.
In 2024, Clark Atlanta quarterback David Wright III earned a helmet sticker from Galloway after throwing for 374 yards and four touchdowns in a comeback victory over Bethune-Cookman. HBCU Gameday’s coverage highlighted how unusual the recognition was for a player outside the FBS, particularly one at an HBCU.
Cameron Edge now adds another performance to that conversation.
His route also shows what an HBCU opportunity can mean for a talented player searching for a place to contribute. A quarterback who barely saw the field at his previous stops is helping drive Morgan State’s strongest start in 17 years.
The recognition keeps coming
By Monday, the ESPN helmet sticker had company.
Morgan State announced that Edge earned both Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week and BOXTOROW National Player of the Week honors following the Villanova victory.
Through five games, the senior has completed 81 of 116 passes for 1,156 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. According to Morgan State, he leads the MEAC in passing and ranks sixth in the FCS in completion percentage.
Next comes a chance to bring that momentum home. The Bears host Robert Morris for Homecoming on October 10, with kickoff scheduled for noon at Hughes Stadium.
Cameron Edge spent years waiting for the chance to lead a college offense.
At Morgan State, he is making that chance count—and giving the national audience a reason to watch.
