Williams won the Rookie of The Year in 2017, but he had close completion from Hampton’s Marrow. A highly-regarded player out of Newport News (VA)’s Heritage HS, he was considered a major get for HIU, who was just coming off its second-straight MEAC title in 2016.
Marrow followed a solid freshman campaign with an even better sophomore season. He averaged 18.8 points, five rebounds and 5.4 assists per game that season, leading Hampton to the MEAC title game as it left the conference abruptly.
His game jumped another level as a junior, as he put up 24.4 points per game and shoot 37 percent from the 3-point line. He, like Williams, declared early for the NBA Draft last summer, but withdrew his name.
Marrow’s scoring average jumped to right at 25 as a senior, good for third in the nation, but he’s also upped his assists average (6.2) while turning the ball over less than three times a game for the first time in his career. This winter he overtook the great Rick Mahorn for first-place on Hampton’s all-time scoring list.
Two years after leading Hampton to the MEAC Tournament finals against North Carolina Central he helped his team make the Big South Championship Game as a senior in 2020. Hampton came up short against Winthrop in a hostile environment, but Marrow finished his career with 2,680 points, good for 29th all-time in NCAA Division I history.
