Southern University made sure to show the SWAC just how far the gap is between it and the bottom of the league.
SU pounded Mississippi Valley State 102-61 on Monday night in Baton Rouge on MLK Day. The win was the third-straight for Southern.
Six Jaguars scored in double figures led by junior Samkelo Cele, who recorded a career-high 18 points, seven rebounds on 15 minutes of play. Graduate transfer Harrison Henderson chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds finishing one rebound shy of recording his third straight double-double.
Other notable performers for Southern: Junior Jayden Saddler added 12 points, seven assist while redshirt senior Lamarcus Lee contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt senior Ahsante Shivers had 10 points and five rebounds. Senior Andre Allen finished with a career-high 10 points and 10 rebounds recording his first double-double in a SU uniform.
Valley took a 3-0 lead before Southern went on a 10-0 run and that was pretty much all she wrote. By halftime the score was 51-38. Southern lead by as many as 44 points.
Southern shot 55.7% from the field (34-61), 42.9% from the 3-point line (9-21), shot 83.3% from the free-throw line (25-30) while MVSU was 37.3% from the floor and SU defense held the Devils to 30.3% from behind the three-point line. SU outrebounded the Devils 44-18.
Caleb Hunter, son of head coach Lindsey Hunter, was the high-man for the Delta Devils with 23 points.
Mississippi Valley State has fallen to 0-12 overall. Ten of those 12 losses have been by 40 points or better, including a loss to UAPB in the SWAC opener.
Southern University is now 3-0 in the SWAC, but the competition will get better when it faces off against Alabama A&M on Saturday, Jan. 23.
