Eddie Robinson ties Bear Bryant as GSU downs OSU

Grambling

Self-defined legacy

Wins and championships stacked up over the decades, as well as professional athletes. From Hall of Famers like Willie Davis and Charlie Joiner to history makers like Doug Williams and Shack Williams.

“My pride is not so much in the triumphs, but in the boys who became men while playing football at Grambling,” Robinson told the St. Petersburg Times. More than 200 Grambling players have made it in pro football, and far more have made it in life.  I have a fatherly kind of pride. They are all my sons.”

Robinson would break the record the following week in Dallas at the State Fair Classic. Grambling beat Prairie View 27-7 for the 324th win in his career in front of nearly 37,000. He walked out of the stadium with a record of 324-106-16.

Grambling would remain under Robinson’s care for another dozen seasons. He would finish with a total of 408 wins and just 165 losses. GSU won nine black college national titles and 17 SWAC titles. But it was never about records for Robinson.

“I don’t want to wake up any morning and feel that breaking the record is more important than the people with whom you’re working,” Robinson said. “I just want to be the same Eddie Robinson.”
