Four seniors end careers as HBCU Hoops Legends

Rob Colon capped his career with a CIAA Championship.

Unlike his three counterparts, Robert Colon isn’t on top of his program’s all-time scoring list. His 1,737 points are seventh overall on Winston-Salem State’s list, which is headed by Earl Monroe, who averaged 41.5 points per game his senior season. CIAA legends and NBA Draft picks Cleo Hill, Carlos Terry and a few other 2k scorers stand in his way.

But Colon’s point total is the most of any Ram in 40 years. The 2016-17 CIAA Rookie of The Year took the conference by storm as a freshman, and at times looked like he was too good for D2 basketball. There were other times where it looked like a parting of the ways was necessary, particularly during the team’s 5-22 performance in 2017-18.

Two years later, the senior from Jacksonville, NC cemented his legacy. He took his WSSU squad, picked to finish eighth in the conference, and led it to the 2020 CIAA title. Colon put the team on his back in the semifinals and finals, scoring 47 points in the two games, including 25 and the game-winning free throws in the title game.

These players weren’t four-or-five star recruits, and they didn’t start off at a mid-major or Power Five school and transfer for more playing time.  All of these young men chose HBCUs from the beginning and left their marks at their universities and left a legacy that they and their families can be proud of for the rest of their lives.

Salute to the HBCU Hoops class of 2020.
