Bowie State WBB undefeated streak continues in 2020

Bowie State took a commanding 96-65 win over Bloomfield College in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon. The no. 23 Bulldogs (12-0, 3-0) have had an impressive stretch to land them atop the CIAA standings, and as the only undefeated HBCU squad, all inclusive, in college basketball.

The Bulldogs dominated the first quarter, beginning with a daunting 22-0 run and only allowing nine points. Setting the tone early, BSU went into halftime ahead 57-23. The Bulldogs only gave up ten points in the third quarter and coasted to a 96-65 home victory.

Senior forward Dynaisha Christian led the Bulldogs with 23 points and six rebounds through 19 minutes.

National Leading Ladies

The victory gave BSU its best season start in school history. The Bulldogs earned their no. 23 spot in the national rankings in December and are currently 18th in the D2SIDA poll. Their strength radiates in their defense, leading the CIAA and second place in the nation with 48.1 points per-game allowed. A 14.5 point scoring margin makes their high-powered scorers a great compliment, but not a necessity to win.

Senior forward Kyaja (JJ) Williams and junior center Talanya Hutton have been the team’s scoring leaders thus far this season. Hutton currently averages 12.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and is third in the CIAA with a .481 field goal percentage. Williams averages a double-double at 14.2 points and 10 rebounds, leading both categories. Moreover, she leads the CIAA and is second in the nation with 46 steals through 11 games. Williams’ dominance has been no secret, as she received the CIAA Women’s Player of the Week nod for three consecutive weeks.

The Bulldogs are no strangers to success with last season’s 14-game win streak. Simultaneously, they know how quickly things can change. BSU will be tested more consistently in CIAA play and as division play commences.

BSU will host Winston-Salem State (6-7, 3-3, 2-0) in non-conference action on Saturday at 2 PM. They will play their fourth conference game on the road next Thursday against Johnson C. Smith (5-6, 0-3, 0-1) at 5:30 PM.
