Report: ECU defensive coordinator named Hampton head coach

Robert Prunty

The winds of change have been blowing at Hampton over the past month, and now they appear to have blown a new coach the Pirates’ way.

Former East Carolina defensive coordinator Robert Prunty has been tabbed as Hampton’s new head coach, according to WTKR.com. Prunty will replace Connell Maynor, who resigned as Hampton’s coach following the team’s season-ending win over rival Howard.

Prunty played his college ball at Alabama A&M. He started last season at ECU as the defensive line coordinator before serving as interim defensive coordinator for the rest of the year.

Earlier this month HBCU Gameday broke the news that Hampton would be leaving the MEAC and joining the Big South. Hampton will play a MEAC schedule in 2018 and will face the OVC’s Tennessee State as well.

  1. Your caption over 11-22-17 Podcast picture reads “Hampton Football Moving Forward.” I am not sure of your intend, but it suggest to me that you are implying that the Big South better than the MEAC, which I totally disagree! I’ll take the MEAC any day over the Big South!!

  2. I do not understand this move. ECU has been terrible the last few years and the ECU defense has been average at best. The applicant pool must have been weak.

    1. They wanted someone white to go along with their white conference but no one white applied so they had to go with the next best thing they could find.
