NCCU defensive back charged in accident that killed student-trainer

An NCCU football player has been charged in the accident that killed a student trainer for the school’s football and women’s basketball teams. NCCU defensive back Tariq Jacobs has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle in an accident that claimed the life of Chekeria Renae Reid last week, according to the Raleigh News and Observer.

The accident took place on N.C. 55 near Crete Street about 6:35 p.m. last Wednesday. Jacob, a sophomore hospitality and tourism major from Norfolk, Va., who plays on the NCCU football team, was driving south on N.C. 55 in a 2000 Honda Accord that crossed the center line and crashed into a northbound 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, Michael said. The Cobalt slammed into the passenger side of the Accord. Jacob’s passenger, Chekeria Renae Reid, 22, a senior who was a team manager on the football and women’s basketball teams, died at the scene.

Police suspect speed was involved in the crash.
