The MEAC is adding an HBCU from the SWAC and a PWI from the Big South for women’s flag football.
Mississippi Valley State and Gardner-Webb will join as associate members in the sport during the 2026-27 academic year. Their additions give the conference six programs for its inaugural season.
The two newcomers will compete alongside Delaware State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Norfolk State and North Carolina Central. All four are full MEAC members, while Mississippi Valley and Gardner-Webb will hold membership only for women’s flag football.
For Mississippi Valley, the move creates an unusual piece of HBCU conference crossover. The Devilettes remain a full member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the MEAC’s longtime rival league. However, the SWAC does not sponsor women’s flag football as a conference sport.
Gardner-Webb gives the new league a PWI member and another North Carolina program. The Runnin’ Bulldogs normally compete in the Big South Conference. They are preparing for the first season of their flag football program.
For the MEAC, the arrangement expands a championship sport without requiring full conference expansion. It also gives the league a presence in Mississippi, far beyond its Atlantic seaboard base.
“Their addition strengthens our presence in this emerging sport and reflects our continued commitment to expanding its championship opportunities for women,” MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills said.
HBCU conference moves early in growing sport
The MEAC announced in June that women’s flag football would become a championship sport in 2026-27. Mississippi Valley and Gardner-Webb turn that plan into a six-team league stretching from Mississippi to the Mid-Atlantic.
Mississippi Valley athletic director Alecia Shields-Gadson called the move a “historic milestone” for the HBCU. She said the partnership would give the school’s athletes a major platform in a sport gaining worldwide attention.
That growth could accelerate quickly. Women’s flag football is part of the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program. Its first NCAA championship could arrive as early as spring 2028. Flag football will also make its Olympic debut during the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.|
The timing gives the MEAC a chance to establish itself before the sport reaches an even larger stage. It also gives Mississippi Valley a conference championship path and Gardner-Webb a ready-made home for its inaugural season.
The conference has not announced its championship format or other operational details. Those decisions will come later as the six programs prepare for the MEAC’s first flag football season.
