NBA All-Star and Golden State Warriors point guard Chris Paul expressed gratitude for LeVelle Moton, head basketball coach at North Carolina Central University. Moton has been part of the HBCU’s coaching staff since 2007, starting as an assistant coach from 2007 to 2009.
Chris Paul recently shared his history with LeVelle Moton during an interview with ABC11’s Travon Miles. The NBA star stated that Moton’s influence and coaching style is known not only “locally, but nationally, on a national level.”
Moton was a star at Raleigh’s Enloe High School in the early 1990s before going to NCCU. Paul has known the HBCU coach since elementary school and has seen the positive impact and growth he has had on his players. After knowing LeVelle Moton as a child, Chris Paul went to play for Wake Forest University, but got his degree from his hometown HBCU — Winston-Salem State University.
“The biggest thing I’ve appreciated about Velle is not just how he coaches guys to be better basketball players, but how he trains them to be men,” Paul said.
Moton trained the NBA All-Star in his early years, helping Paul become widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history.
Moton is known for his influential coaching skills, but he is also recognized as a great basketball player himself.
“Don’t get it twisted, Velle was nice too. Velle could hoop,” Paul said, admiring Moton’s skill and knowledge of basketball.
Moton was the 1996 CIAA Player of the Year. He also became the all-time winningest coach in the history of NCCU men’s basketball during the 2023-24 season, proving his overall expertise.
Chris Paul’s deep admiration for Coach LeVelle Moton highlights Moton’s dual impact as both a skilled player and an influential coach who shapes his athletes into well-rounded individuals. Moton’s achievements and lasting legacy at NCCU underscore his significance in the world of basketball.
