The new-look UCLA football coaching staff already has its share of notable names on the sideline and now looks to be adding an HBCU legend to its roster. According to Bruin report online, a 24/7sports.com site, former Howard quarterback and veteran offensive coaching guru Ted White, is set to join former NFL running back and new Bruin head coach DeShaun Foster as well as SuperBowl champion offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy as the quarterbacks coach at UCLA.
As the quarterback for Howard University from 1995-1998, Ted White amassed 9,845 total offensive yards, which still stands as the MEAC record for total offense. He was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996 and still holds conference and school records for passing completions (638), passing yardage (9,908), and touchdown passes (92.)
Ted White would go on to play in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1998 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 1999.
White’s coaching career began as the quarterbacks coach for Texas Southern University in 2006-07. His reputation as a quarterbacking guru grew through his many stops within HBCU football. White coached at Southern, Howard, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Prairie View A&M throughout the 2010’s.
He also has a solid professional coaching resume as well, having coached for the DC Defenders in the XFL and his most recent role as the quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans since 2022.
On February 12, 2024, UCLA became the 16th of the 133 NCAA FBS football programs to have a black head coach when they hired notable NFL running back and Bruin alumnus, DeShaun Foster. A few weeks later the Bruins made another splash hire when they brought in former Kansas City Chiefs SuperBowl champion offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, a coach who many believe hasn’t gotten an NFL head coaching job because of the color of his skin.
The addition of Ted White to an offensive coaching staff that already includes DeShaun Foster and Eric Bieniemy immediately makes UCLA an official hotbed of black coaching talent as the Bruins look to build a power football program under DeShaun Foster as new members of the Big Ten.
