Southern handles Alabama State on the diamond

VERO BEACH, Fla. —Junior Jose Almazan struck out eight Southern University hitters over six innings of work, but it was not enough as the Alabama State Hornets fell to the Jaguars 7-1.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Almazan (1-1) threw six innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on seven hits and walking two for Alabama State (2-4).

Junior Kyler McIntosh led the way offensively for the Hornets, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 7-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the eighth inning. Alabama State got an RBI single from senior Randy Flores, scoring sophomore Jamal George from second base. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as neither ASU or Southern scored again in the ballgame.

» Southern was led offensively by junior Khyle Radcliffe, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
» Sophomore Ranard Grace led the Jaguars pitching staff, throwing six shutout innings.
