The North Carolina A&T football program appears to be in the process of getting a multi-million dollar Athletic Facility facelift.
An agenda for the January 24, 2024 meeting of the UNC Board of Governors Committee on Budget and Finance shows that North Carolina A&T has made a capital projects request for three projects totaling over $6 million, one of which is a “Football Locker Room Renovation” of just shy of $2 million.
Schools within the University of North Carolina System; like North Carolina A&T, are required to request authority from the University of North Carolina Board of Governors to proceed with nonâ€appropriated projects using available funds (nonâ€general funds).
These nonâ€appropriated capital projects are funded by the institutions themselves and include the construction, repair, or renovation of facilities such as residence halls, dining facilities, research buildings, athletic facilities, and student health
buildings.
In Layman’s terms, North Carolina A&T has already secured the funding for these projects on its own and is now awaiting the approval process from the Board of Governors.
There don’t seem to be any roadblocks to the request as the board attached the following recommendation to the agenda:
All projects and associated funding sources are in compliance with G.S. 143Câ€8â€12 (State Budget Act).
It is recommended that these projects be authorized and reported to the North Carolina Office of State Budget and
Management as nonâ€appropriated projects that do not require any additional debt or burden on state
appropriations.
There is also an action item attached that states:
This item requires a vote by the committee, with a vote by the full Board of Governors through the consent agenda.
The UNC Board of Governors’ next scheduled meeting is on February 21st, 2024 but it is not stated if this specific vote will be on the agenda for the next meeting.
Also on the North Carolina A&T capital project’s request is an “Eâ€Sports Interior Renovation” totaling $2,197,059 and a “Radio Tower Relocation” for $1,990,439. The total for the “Football Locker Room Renovation” is $1,999,966 bringing the total request to $6,187,464.
Last year, NC A&T released an athletic facility master plan through 2038 that revealed plans to build a new convocation center for basketball as well as a new football practice field and renovations to War Memorial Coliseum and a varsity soccer field.
A state-of-the-art locker room can be a difference-maker when it comes to recruiting. The locker room photoshoot has become one of the first formal interactions between a football program and its possible future stars and with an almost $2 million upgrade, North Carolina A&T looks to add another impressive component to its athletic facilities resume.
