Delaware State to begin upgrading athletic facilities

Big changes are on the way for the Hornets.

Delaware State will begin plans to upgrade several facilities in the athletic department.

Delaware State President Tony Allen, Athletic Director Alecia Shields-Gadson, and Athletic Transformation Committee Chairman Steven R. Ewing discussed the plans for upgrading facilities including locker rooms for football, women’s lacrosse, and soccer, the athletics welcome house, a football lounge and meeting space and a golf simulator.

The plan also includes upgrading the football field house and administration offices and building an indoor practice facility and a new grandstand for Alumni Stadium.

Ewing, who donated $1 million to Delaware State last month at the Delaware State Scholarship Ball, met with the board of trustees after becoming chairman of the athletic transformation committee. The board bought into the plan and committed to the upgrades. Ewing’s contribution brought total donations to $3 million. NBA Hall of Fame legend Magic Johnson, who has a partnership with DSU as a food provider with his company SodexoMagic, also donated $600,000 with a promised $1 million as DSU continues to grow. DSU is fully committed to the plan with the financial backing to support it.

Ewing is joined on the Athletic Transformation Committee with former Delaware State and NFL wide receiver Darnerien McCants and former Alcorn State and NFL Super Bowl Champion and Pro Bowler Donald Driver.

Driver began a partnership with Delaware State last summer to provide sports performance services from his company Driven Elite. Driven Elite combined with upgraded facilities will be a game changer for training Delaware State athletes.

Allen understands that facilities play an important part in recruiting and maintaining athletes and upgrading will only benefit Delaware State.

“We can’t have parents coming to our campus, coming to our locker rooms, and thinking it’s Dover High School.”

Shields-Gadson, who has been the athletic director since 2021 is ready for the upgrade and understands the significance of better facilities.

“We are striving to provide our student-athletes with the opportunities to be the best that they can be. We can’t do that if we don’t have the facilities to accommodate that.”
