Alabama State announces signees and midseason transfers

Hornets sign 14 players plus midseason transfers.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State announced the 2020 signing class officially prior to the third annual Signing Day Bash Wednesday night at ASU Stadium.

The class features signees from the state of Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina; including four signees from the city of Montgomery. The Hornets were able to fill needs on both sides of the football as they signed 14 defensive players, eight offensive players and one special teams’ standout.

The Hornets also welcomed in eight mid-year transfers. Below is a list of the 2020 signees, followed by the mid-year transfers.

James Burgess / 6-3 / 200 / DB / Center Point, Ala. / Huffman HS

Recorded 52 tackles, 18 pass breakups, four interceptions and two forced fumbles his senior year at Huffman High School … Chose Alabama State over Memphis.

Vamir Cadet, 5-10 / 175 / ATH/ Hollywood, Fla. / McArthur HS

Played multiple positions at McArthur HS … Led the team to the state playoffs … Also lettered in track and field … Chose Alabama State over Alabama A&M.

Myles Crawley, 6-4 / 215 / QB / Tucker, Ga. / Tucker HS

Threw for 4,015 yards and 42 touchdowns, while completing 65 percent of his passes his junior and senior seasons at Tucker High School … Played in the Georgia Coaches’ Association North-South All-Star.

Dylan Creech / 6-0 / 225 / LB / Geneva, Ala. / Geneva HS

Named a Blue-Gray All-American … Recorded over 350 tackles in his high school career with more than 50 tackles for loss … Picked off five passes and ran two back for touchdowns … Forced 10 fumbles, including six his senior season … Also scored 20 touchdowns on offense.

Demarkus Cunningham / 6-2 / 205 / LB / Bessemer, Ala. / Bessemer City HS

Recorded 123 solo tackles and assisted on 32 more his senior season at Bessemer City HS … Had 11 tackles for loss, intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble … Chose Alabama State over Alabama A&M, Troy, UAB and South Alabama among others.

Devin DeLaine / 6-1 / 190 / LB / Hampton, Ga. / Dutchtown HS

Named a Blue-Gray All-American … Tabbed first team GHSA 5A All-Region 4.

Rishard Densmore / 6-0 / 185 / WR / Bessemer, Ala. / Bessemer City HS
Named a three-star athlete by 247 Sports … Ranked the 50th best athlete in the state of Alabama … Chose Alabama State over Kentucky, Tennessee, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Troy and UAB among others.

Rodney Echols / 5-10 / 175 / DB / Orlando, Fla. / Jones HS
Picked-off seven passes and scored a couple of defensive touchdowns … Recorded 30 tackles and 11 assists … Chose Alabama State over UCF and Mississippi Valley State.

Gavin Edwards / 6-1 / 170 / DB / Alexander City, Ala. / Benjamin Russell HS

Recorded 65 tackles his senior season at Benjamin Russell HS … Tallied three interceptions, 10 pass breakups and one defensive touchdown … Named team’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Corbin Grant / 6-0 / 290 / DL / Pike Road, Ala. / Pike Road HS

Played at Pike Road High School along with early signee Aubrey Grace, becoming the school’s second NCAA Division I signee… Helped lead Pike Road to a regional championship during senior season… Helped the team to the AHSAA playoffs… Chose Alabama State over Alcorn State and West Alabama.

DJ Gray / 6-4 / 225 / TE / Gainesville, Ga. / East Hall HS

Caught 29 passes for 617 yards and six touchdowns his senior season at East Hall HS … Averaged 21.3 yards per reception … Ran anchor on 4×100-meter relay team … Also ran 11.62 seconds in the 100m and 23.92 seconds in the 200m.

Enrico Harden / 5-10 / 175 / ATH / Forsyth, Ga. / Mary Persons HS

Ran for 729 yards and 11 touchdowns his senior season at Mary Persons HS … Caught 22 passes for 455 yards and five touchdowns … On defense, he recorded 31 tackles, picked off four passes and ran an interception back for a touchdown … Also had a kickoff return touchdown.

Awysum Harris / 6-4 / 225 / OLB / Decatur, Ala. / Austin HS

Recorded 105 tackles and 14 tackles for loss his senior season at Austin HS … Intercepted three passes, had four pass breakups and recorded three sacks … Chose Alabama State over UAB, Jacksonville State, Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri State.

Cameron Fortson / 6-5 / 215 / OLB / Atlanta, Ga. / Therrell HS

Named first team all-region, all-state honorable mention and All-Atlanta Public School first team … Lettered in football and basketball… Helped lead to a state championship in basketball during junior season… Chose Alabama State over Western Kentucky, Navy, Akron, Jacksonville State, Tennessee State and South Carolina State, among others.

Kisean Johnson / 6-2 / 185 / WR / Birmingham, Ala. / Ramsay HS

During senior season, hauled in 39 receptions… Tallied 850 yards receiving with nine touchdowns…. Averaged 21.8 yards per game during final prep season.

Christian Lee 6-3 / 225 / OLB / Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. / Dwyer HS
Recorded 65 tackles and 11 sacks his senior season at Dwyer HS … Recorded an interception and broke up 11 passes … Chose Alabama State over UAPB, Columbia and Colgate … Grandson of former ASU President Dr. Joe A. Lee.


E’Shawn Mayes / 6-3 / 230 / TE / Hephzibah, Ga. / Hephzibah HS

Caught 62 passes for 1,358 yards and 14 receiving touchdowns in his career at Hephzibah HS … Averaged 21.9 yards per reception and 36.7 yards per game.

Joe Owens / 6-4 / 180 / QB / Piedmont, S.C. / Wren HS

Completed 59 percent of his passes his senior season at Wren HS … Threw for 4,488 yards and 62 touchdowns … Also ran for 348 yards on the ground and 11 rushing touchdowns … Chose Alabama State over Alabama A&M.

Trevor Robinson / 6-1 / 175 / DB / Montgomery, Ala. / Park Crossing HS
Completed 54 percent of his passes and posted an 83.7 quarterback rating his senior season at Park Crossing HS … Amassed 2,452 all-purpose yards and scored 27 touchdowns … On defense he recorded nine tackles and four pass breakups … Rated a three-star recruit by 247 Sports and chose Alabama State over Grambling, Jackson State and Tennessee State.

Keeundra Salter / 6-3 / 290 / OL / Montgomery, Ala. / Lee HS

Helped lead Lee HS to an 8-5 record and a quarterfinal berth in the AHSAA state playoffs … Chose Alabama State over Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Jackson State, Bethune-Cookman and Samford.

Treqwan Thomas / 6-1 / 215 / OLB / Orlando, Fla. / Jones HS

Recorded 55 tackles and 24 assists his senior year at Jones HS … Sacked the quarterback 13 times, broke up five passes and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Malik Washington / 6-2 / 205 / LB / Kennesaw, Ga. / North Cobb HS

Recorded 62 tackles and nine tackles for loss his senior season at North Cobb HS … Tallied four sacks, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble, as well … Played in the Georgia-South Carolina Blitz Border All-Star Game.

Attended Garden City Community College … Played at Dwyer first two years before transferring to Palm Beach Central his junior year… Last year recorded 68 tackles (24 FL), five sacks and two fumble recoveries… Led Broncos to regional finals.

Abdou Diop / 6-3 / 220/ Harlem N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes HS / ASA Brooklyn
Played at ASA Brooklyn… During sophomore season, caught eight passes for 111 yards… Averaged 13.9 yards per game, and hauled in four touchdowns…Played at Cardinal Hayes High School.

Jaquan Foote / 6-0 / 220 / LB / Opelika, Ala. / Opelika High School / Austin Peay
Attended Austin Peay State where he redshirted… Played linebacker for coach Erik Speakman at Opelika High School… Had 46 tackles, 1.0 sack and a pass deflection during his senior season… Posted 68 tackles a junior… Helped led Opelika to the Alabama state quarterfinals in 2017.

Jacob Frazier / 6-0 / 200 / QB / Magnolia, Texas / Magnolia HS / Kilgore CC
Named Second Team All-Conference … Finished the season 148-for-207 passing… Recorded 2,333 passing yards … Threw for 17 touchdowns …  Recorded 482 yards rushing on 82 attempts … Recorded eight rushing touchdowns.

Brandon Gaddy / 6-3 / 311 / DL / Virginia Beach, Va. / Bishop Sullivan Catholic / Maryland
Played in 10 games in 2019… Finished the year with 16 total tackles, including 11 solo… Recorded on tackle for loss and one sack… Also recorded one pass breakup … Appeared in all 12 games, mostly on special teams … Notched first two tackles of his career against Rutgers (10/13) in 2018 … Did not see game action as a freshman… A consensus 3-star recruit according to all major recruiting databases … Totaled 23 tackles and 6.5 sacks as a senior … Helped lead Bishop Sullivan to a 7-3 record in 2016 … Ran for 772 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior … Also received offers from Oregon, Florida State, Florida, Virginia Tech and Michigan State.

Played two years at De Anza College … Helped team to American – Pacific 7 Division championship and an American Conference Championship Bowl victory.
