Bowie State continues to roll, beats Va. State

ETTRICK, Va. — The No. 16 ranked Bowie State Bulldogs kept its record unblemished, as the Bulldogs spoiled the Virginia State Homecoming, beating the Trojans 24-14. The win improves Bowie State to 7-0 on the year, 4-0 in league play and 2-0 in the North.

Virginia State scored the games’ first points at the 13:34 mark of the second quarter via a Cordieral Cook 8-yard touchdown run for the 7-0 lead.

Bowie State tied the game at 7-all following a Ja’rome Johnson (Washington, D.C.) to Du’Shon David (Washington, D.C.) 5-yard pass, catch and score with 3:34 left in the first half, capping off a 9-play, 59-yard drive.

The Bulldogs of Bowie State took the lead at the 11:11 mark of the 3rd quarter when Johnson connected with a wide-open Geordan Clark (White Plains, Md.) for 57-yard touchdown and Gene Carson (Accokeek, Md.) added the extra point for 14-7 advantage.

Bowie State’s defense blocked a Virginia State punt and took advantage of the turnover and Carson booted a 37-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 17-7 lead with 9:12 to go in the third quarter.

Virginia State (5-2, 3-1 CIAA, 1-1 North) closed the gap to 17-14 with 1:45 left in the third quarter after 16-yard rushing touchdown by Toure Wallace.

The Bowie State got those seven points right back on the Bulldogs next possession when the Johnson and David duo found the endzone again, this time for a 47-yard touchdown and a 24-14 advantage with 12:40 left in the fourth quarter, capping off a 9-play, 84 yard drive.

The Bulldogs defense came up big again on the very next Trojans possession when Tevin Singleton (District Heights, Md.) intercepted a pass at the VSU 33-yard line, dashing any thoughts Virginia State had on claiming a win.

Johnson led Bowie State on offense for the second week in a row, passing for 182 yards, completing 10-of-22 passes and rushed for a team-high 71 yards. Geordan Clark led all receivers with 78 yards while David had two receptions for 52 yards.

Juantez McRae (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Bowie State defense with a game-high 10 tackles and James Dumas (Washington, D.C.) accounted for eight tackles which included four tackles for a loss.

The Bulldogs return home next Saturday (October 26) to host the Panthers of Virginia Union with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
