Trent Cannon is fast, both on the football field and in the negotiating room. After just one day at rookie minicamp, the former Virginia State star has signed his first professional football contract with the New York Jets.

“I’m feeling good, just settling on in,” Cannon said to the New York Jets website. He actually inked his deal Thursday night right after checking in for the minicamp.

Returns might be the way to go

For his college career, Cannon played in 38 games (25 starts), rushed for 4,246 yards (7.1 yards/carry) and 46 touchdowns, caught 51 passes for 638 more yards and seven more TDs, and also averaged 33.1 yards/kickoff return with three TD returns the last two seasons.

Cannon is the Trojans all-time leading rusher, with 4,246 career yards.  He may create value initially, however, with his ability to return kicks in the NFL. Cannon averaged 33.1 yards per kickoff return with three touchdown returns in the last two seasons.

“I’m just going to compete for a spot and work toward becoming a returner,” Cannon said.
