Bills Sign Lane Cornerback Kearney

Lane College defensive back Vernon Kearney has signed with the Buffalo Bills.

Lane College has produced quite a few solid NFL players for a small Division II school, including reciever Jacoby Jones of the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens. The Buffalo Bills hope they have found another as they have signed Lane defensive back Vernon Kearney as undrafted free agent. The signing was reported by NFLDraftZone.com’s Damon Talbot.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsThe 6’2, 179 pound defensive back got scout’s attention with strong performances in all-star games. And while his small school background may have hurt his draft stock, he will get a chance to prove himself at the next level. Kearney hopes to follow in the steps of another undrafted Lane player that made a difference: Fred Lane.

Lane came out of nowhere to make the Carolina Panthers roster in 1997 and finished his career as the team’s all-time leading rusher prior to his untimely death in 2000.

As for Kearney, scouts seem divided as to whether he’ll play cornerback or safety. His height and reach will give him a chance, and if he can work on his press coverage, his self-professed weakness, don’t be surprised to see him on the Bills opening day roster.
