Organizers have canceled a major HBCU band showcase in Birmingham just days before its scheduled Sunday start.
The Legends at Legion Field Battle of the Bands will not take place Sunday, Aug. 30, at historic Legion Field. Organizers announced the cancellation Saturday. The event had a 3 p.m. Central start time.
“This event has been cancelled,” the announcement stated. “All tickets will be refunded in full.”
Organizers did not disclose a reason for the cancellation. The event’s ticketing page? also lists the showcase as canceled.
Big Tickets will issue refunds automatically. The money should appear in customers’ accounts within seven to 10 business days.
The decision removes a major HBCU band attraction from a busy opening weekend for Black college football. Organizers called Legends at Legion Field the official kickoff to the 2026 season. They projected a crowd of more than 30,000 fans.
The ticket page listed Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Southern, Texas Southern and North Carolina Central. Albany State, Arkansas Baptist, Tennessee State and Miles College also appeared in the announced lineup.
Several rank among the most recognizable marching bands in the HBCU community.
Beyond the field shows, the Birmingham event was set to include drum majors, dance lines and percussion battles. A “Future Legends” recruiting experience also promised scholarship and networking opportunities for high school band students.
Cancellation changes major Birmingham weekend
Promoters positioned Legends at Legion Field as the Sunday finale to a weekend built around HBCU football and band culture.
The inaugural Birmingham Football Classic takes place Saturday at Legion Field. Alabama State will face Southern in a SWAC matchup.
Tennessee State and Jackson State will meet in Nashville that day, while Alabama A&M and Howard play in Atlanta. Promoters sought to draw fans from those games back to Birmingham for one final event.
The cancellation leaves supporters without the advertised closing act. It also takes away another performance opportunity for participating programs.
This would have been the second annual Legends at Legion Field showcase. The 2025 event brought HBCU and high school bands to the venue.
The college lineup included Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Alcorn State and Talladega College. Virginia Union, Mississippi Valley State, Central State and Miles also participated.
Legion Field remains one of the most recognizable venues in HBCU sports. The stadium has long hosted the Magic City Classic between Alabama State and Alabama A&M. Promoters sought to expand that connection through a standalone band event.
General admission tickets for Sunday’s showcase started at $35 before fees. Organizers also sold group packages, field-level seating, suite access and all-access media passes.
Organizers did not say whether Legends at Legion Field will return in 2027. They also gave no indication of a rescheduled HBCU band event.
Ticket holders should monitor the payment method used for their purchase as the refund process moves forward.
