Before beginning his HBCU basketball journey at Winston-Salem State University, incoming freshman Nick Keith is making time to give back to young players in his hometown area.+
Keith will host his inaugural youth basketball camp on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. until noon at Triad Basketball Academy in Greensboro, North Carolina. The camp will combine basketball instruction, mentorship and an introduction to HBCU culture.
“I want to start giving back to the community by helping young athletes develop their fundamentals while having fun at the same time,” Keith said. “I’ve had people support me throughout my journey, and I want to begin doing the same for the next generation.”
Future WSSU student bringing HBCU culture to camp
The camp comes as Keith prepares to enroll at Winston-Salem State, one of North Carolina’s five public HBCUs. Along with basketball drills, campers will get an introduction to HBCU history, culture and school spirit, with WSSU represented in select capacities during the event.
Keith’s camp is being presented in partnership with Da Drew League, a Greensboro-based basketball organization founded by Brittany Drew. IM Sports & Entertainment is assisting with program development and media relations.
The inaugural event will be limited to approximately 25 players in first through eighth grade, creating an opportunity for Keith and volunteer coaches to provide hands-on instruction.
Registration costs $30 per camper. The camp will be held at Triad Basketball Academy, located at 803 Waugh Street in Greensboro.
For Keith, however, the HBCU connection makes the camp about more than basketball. Before taking his own next step at Winston-Salem State, he’s using the game to introduce another generation of young athletes to the community he’s preparing to join.
