HBCU Football: Howard University ready to prove doubters wrong

As the 2024 HBCU football season kicks off, Howard University enters as the defending MEAC champions. Despite being predicted to finish second in preseason polls, the Bison are ready to prove their doubters wrong. With Coach Larry Scott at the helm, Howard is focused on maintaining their championship standard, fixing weaknesses, and finding a new quarterback to replace Quinton Williams.

The Bison are embracing a new challenge. Last season was a remarkable one for Howard, culminating in a MEAC championship and a trip to the Celebration Bowl. However, the season did not end as the Bison hoped. Coach Scott acknowledged the need to move past last year’s near-miss and reset for the new season.

“Every year, a football team takes on a new life,” Scott said. “We had to redefine our goals, set a new plan, and start working towards getting back to Atlanta and finishing the job.”

For the Bison, championship success comes with added pressure and expectations. Despite being ranked second in the MEAC preseason Poll, Scott sees this as an opportunity to fuel the team’s drive.

“Respect is earned, not given,” Coach Scott replied to Jay Walker during the live show, “Being predicted second only adds to our motivation. We’re built to last and ready to prove ourselves.”

Addressing the Quarterback Situation

One of the key challenges for Howard University this year is replacing HBCU football veteran quarterback Quinton Williams, who has moved on. Scott is optimistic about the competition for the starting role.

“It’s an exciting time,” he said. “We’ve got talented transfers and returning players competing for the spot. We want our quarterback to be the most competitive person on the field. Whoever emerges will lead us forward.”

The Bison have added several new faces to the roster, including transfers from Wake Forest, Minnesota, and FIU, to strengthen their lineup. Coach Scott emphasizes the importance of developing these new additions and blending them with the existing talent to maintain a strong performance.

Preseason Challenges and Opportunities

Howard’s non-conference schedule will see them play several games in New Jersey, against Rutgers (FBS) and Morehouse (HBCU) are the highlights, which Scott views as a strategic move.

“Playing in different venues helps us prepare for the tough games in conference play,” he explained. “It’s about being road-tested and ready for challenges. These games also allow our alumni in the Northeast to support us.”

In addition to their New Jersey games, the Bison will face off against fellow HBCU Tennessee State at homecoming, adding another exciting matchup to their schedule.

Focus on Special Teams and Defense

Special teams have been a point of emphasis for Howard this offseason, with the addition of NFL Super Bowl champion Tory Woodbury as a special teams coach.

“Woodbury brings a fresh perspective and a higher level of expertise,” Scott said. “Special teams can be a game-changer, and we’re focusing on improving this area to ensure success both in and out of conference play.”

Defensively, Howard is poised to be a strength. With a solid foundation and a focus on building from their defensive success last year, the Bison aim to dominate on this side of the ball. Coach Scott is confident that strong defense, combined with improved special teams, will be critical for their success this season.

The Path Forward

As the Bison look to defend their title and surpass preseason expectations, they remain focused on teamwork and preparation. The goal is clear: return to Atlanta and claim the HBCU football crown.

“We have to come together and stay process-oriented,” Scott emphasized. “Our focus is on improving daily, working together, and achieving our ultimate goal.”

Howard University’s 2024 season promises to be an exciting journey. With a motivated team, a new quarterback, and a determined coaching staff, the Bison are set to make their mark and continue their tradition of excellence.

As Coach Scott puts it, “Bison are built to last.”
