Virginia State has climbed to the top of the CIAA football rankings, overtaking the defending champion Virginia Union, which is predicted second to it’s in-state HBCU rival in 2024. This shift in rankings promises an exhilarating season as both teams have eyes for the CIAA championship.
Under the guidance of Dr. Henry Frazier, the Virginia State is embracing a challenging schedule against the defending SIAC champion and an FCS HBCU.
“We have a tough schedule, starting with Benedict and Norfolk State,” Frazier said.
Frazier emphasizes building toughness within his team which went 8-2 in 2023.
“Last year, I had a tough squad with graduate students. This year, it’s on me to ensure my team remains resilient,” he explained.
The Virginia Union, led by Dr. Alvin Parker, return nine starters on both offense and defense. With the top defense in the CIAA last season, the VUU is well-positioned for success. Key players include Isaac Anderson and Isaiah Dickens.
“Isaac Anderson is one of the best in the league,” Parker noted.
Virginia Union’s offense is powered by Jada Byers, a 2022 Harlon Hill finalist and the CIAA’s rushing leader in 2023. Supported by a formidable offensive line, Byers remains a crucial asset for the VUU.
Virginia State led the CIAA in total offense last season, with Virginia Union close behind. Despite both teams losing their starting quarterbacks, their offensive capabilities are expected to remain strong. Virginia Union’s defense, featuring key players like Anderson and Jamal Graham, should continue to be a dominant force.
Virginia State’s offensive lineman Bruno Onwuazor, who earned Second-Team All-CIAA honors last season, has also been named to the preseason All-CIAA team, underscoring his importance to the VSU.
The Panthers have a three-game winning streak against the Trojans, including a decisive 30-20 victory in Richmond. This streak adds extra motivation for the Trojans as they aim to break the Panthers’ dominance.
The Virginia State’s rise to the top ranking sets up an exciting CIAA football season. With Dr. Frazier’s strategic leadership, the Trojans are expected to challenge the Panthers, the reigning champions.
