HAMPTON, Va. (June 25, 2024) … Hampton University head coach Trent Boykin announced the hiring of Howard Feggins. Feggins, former head coach at St. Augustine’s, has more than four decades experience as a player and coach. Feggins will coach Hampton’s running backs and serve as special teams coordinator.
“Coach Feggins has a wealth of experience as a successful coach on the professional, college, and high school levels,” Hampton University Trent Boykin said. “He is an excellent teacher and instructor and Coach Feggins is a student of the game.”
A native of South Hill, Va., Feggins played safety and cornerback at North Carolina where he registered 169 tackles before embarking on a career in the NFL. Feggins played with the New England Patriots and the New York Giants as well as with the London Monarchs and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
He moved into the coaching ranks as an intern with the Giants. He spent two seasons in the high school ranks in Ohio before moving to the collegiate level at Wingate, Miami (Ohio), Northwestern.
He spent two seasons with the New England Patriots with the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He served on the coaching staffs at Eastern Michigan, South Carolina State, Norfolk State, Colorado State-Pueblo, and Fayetteville State. In his HBCU coaching stops, he has five championships in seven seasons. Feggins served as offensive coordinator in the HBCU Legacy Bowl. He served as the head coach at St. Augustine’s in 2023.
Feggins spent two seasons at Colorado State-Pueblo sandwiched around coaching positions in Kentucky and Ohio. He was the offensive coordinator at Fayetteville State for one season before being named head coach at St. Augustine’s.
Many of his student-athletes have earned their diplomas and played at the next level.
A 1987 North Carolina graduate, Feggins is married to Renee Dickerson. The couple have two children, Kevin and Jensen. Jensen played football at Murray State and Colorado State-Pueblo.
