HBCU star, top FCS defensive player in NCAA transfer portal

Former Tennessee State University defensive lineman Terrell Allen is the latest HBCU football star to hit the NCAA Transfer Portal.

The 2023 Buck Buchanan Award winner is reportedly headed to the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3Sports.

Terrell Allen led the FCS in sacks (14.5), sack yardage (123), tackles for loss (28), and tackle yardage for loss (149) during the 2023 regular season, helping Tennessee State record a 6-5 record. He won Big South/OVC Defensive Player of The Year and became the third HBCU winner of the Buck Buchanan Award –  given to the top defensive player in FCS football – in the last three years.

Allen played his prep ball at North Little Rock High School, putting up 72 tackles, 32 tackles for loss and 14 sacks in his senior season. He committed to Austin Peay, where he finished the spring 2021 season with 18 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Allen completed the 2021 season with 36 tackles, nine quarterback hits and five sacks for APSU in the fall. He was named a 2021 HERO Sports Sophomore All-America and a 2021 Second Team All-OVC and was also a standout in the classroom being named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Allen racked 36 tackles in 2022 after landing at TSU in the transfer portal. That included 20 solo and 16 assists to go along with 12.0 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks before exploding in 2023.

Allen’s departure is the latest blow to a solid Tennessee State defense. Linebacker Monroe Beard announced his entry into the NCAA transfer portal last month.
