Jackson State football loses big time defensive player to portal

DeVonta Davis

Editor’s note: The initial story identified DeVonta Davis as joining Jackson State football under Deion Sanders. Davis signed under John Hendrick in 2019 but began his career under Sanders.

Devonta Davis, one of the last holders from the Deion Sanders Era of Jackson State football, has hit the transfer portal.

The stud defensive lineman who helped Jackson State football win back-to-back SWAC titles in 2021 and 2022 announced he is entering the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate student.

“First and foremost I want to thank God. Without him, none of this would be possible.

Second I would like to thank Jackson State University for an amazing four years of my life. I can truly say that I can call Jackson home. I would like to thank every coach that has not just coached me but help become a better man on and off the field.

To all my teammates I appreciate y’all for pushing me to be the guy I am today.”

With that being said, I am entering my name in NCAA transfer portal as a grad with one year of eligibility left.

DeVonta Davis, Jackson State football, Deion Sanders

Davis signed with Jackson State in 2019 under then-head coach John Hendrick. He recorded 24 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one forced fumble, and one quarterback hurry in 12 games in 2021 in his debut season. Davis recorded 21 tackles (nine solo) with 2.0 sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, and one forced fumble in 2022 as Jackson State went 12-1 before falling to North Carolina Central in the Celebration Bowl.

Devonta Davis was one of the most experienced players returning for Jackson State under T.C. Taylor following the departure of Deion Sanders and he recorded 21 total tackles – including 12 solo stops – five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks along with one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Listed as 6’3, 296 pounds, Davis will likely find plenty of suitors in the NCAA transfer portal. Meanwhile, he leaves a big hole for Jackson State football.
