North Carolina Central University (NCCU) had its spring game on April 13th, and Eagle head coach Trei Oliver believes that he still has the best quarterback in HBCU football in three-year backup Walker Harris.
Walker Harris is the new starting quarterback for the Eagles this upcoming season after having Davius Richards at the helm for the past three years.
“We had the best quarterback in black college with Davius Richards, we have the best quarterback in HBCU football this upcoming year with Walker Harris,” Coach Oliver said in the post game interview session.
Even though this will be his first year running the offense, this system isn’t new to Walker Harris. He has been the backup to the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Year Davius Richards for the past few years and now it’s his time to run the show.
Harris was asked about his coach’s statement about being the best quarterback in black college football for this upcoming season.
“It gives me a lot of confidence, I’ve been here for a while and paid my dues,” Harris said. “Three years as a backup to Davius was an honor and privilege, but I feel like it’s my time and my moment and I earned it.”
“He has an unbelievable arm,” Oliver said. “He throws people open, and he does a great job at placing the ball.”
Throughout the spring game, Walker Harris displayed the intangibles Coach Oliver spoke so highly of.
Harris started the spring game scrimmage period with a beautiful back shoulder throw to the sideline to where only the wide receiver could make a play on the ball. A couple of possessions later he showed off his arm strength and threw a 30-yard missile down the middle of the field.
Harris ended his NCCU spring game performance with a nice throw to the back of the endzone that three different defenders nearly tipped before being caught by his receiver in the red zone.
Oliver thanked the fans and Durham mayor for coming out to support the spring game and encouraged fans to make the trip to the Orange Blossom Classic in Miami Gardens, FL where the Eagles will kick off the 2024 season against Alabama State on September 1st in Miami, Flordia.
