Alcorn State women knock off Southern in SWAC Tournament

The SWAC will have a new champion in women’s basketball.

Alcorn State recorded its third straight win, handing Southern a 59-52 loss at Bartow Arena on Thursday afternoon in the SWAC Tournament. The Lady Braves went into halftime with a 29-22 lead and were able to hold off the Lady Jaguars for the final 20 minutes.

Alcorn State win was spearheaded by a balanced scoring effort. Destiny Brown led the scoring with 18 points, while Nia McCalphia and Zy’Nyia White added 14 points each. The Lady Braves’ ability to generate opportunities at the charity stripe was crucial to their success. They drew 25 personal fouls on the defense, which led to 21 points (91% shooting) from the free throw line. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 0.94 points scored per possession on 53% true shooting.

Southern will not be able to defend its SWAC crown.

Southern was led by Taylor Williams, who scored 14 points while collecting five boards. As a team, the Lady Jaguars had some offensive struggles, scoring just 0.83 points per possession on 32% shooting from the field. It was a forgettable game from three-point range as the team collectively shot 2-of-12 from deep.

  • Alcorn State scored below 60 points for the 24th time this season
  • Southern outscored Alcorn State 16 to 5 on points off turnovers
  • The Lady Braves led from start to finish; there were zero lead changes or ties

Alcorn State earned a good win against a tough SWAC rival. The Lady Braves will face their next opponent, Grambling State, at Bartow Arena on March 15. This loss was a rare slip-up for Southern, which had been playing well recently. The Lady Jaguars will not get the chance to defend their title.
