Miles College women win thrilling SIAC Championship

Miles College Basketball

The Miles College women’s basketball team captured its first ever SIAC Championship on Sunday afternoon in Savannah, Georgia. The woman who led them there was Feliah Greer who scored a career high 33 points for Miles in a 75-72 thriller over Kentucky State..

Both teams came out with near identical efforts in the first two quarters in this tightly contested game. Kentucky State outscored Miles 16-11 in the second quarter, and Miles responded with a 16-10 effort in the second quarter. In the third quarter Greer scored the first seven points for Miles after the break, setting the tone for what appeared to be a comfortable lead for Miles.

But that comfort would disappear in the final 60 seconds of the game.

As Greer calmly dribbled up court against the Kentucky State pressure scoring a clutch layup to push the lead to 69-60, the energy seemed solely on the side of Miles. But Kentucky State expertly managed the final minute of regulation and narrowed the lead down possession by possession.

It was a 71-66 game after Taleah Dilworth scored a layup with 37 seconds remaining. Two possessions later KSU trimmed the lead to 72-69 with a Sydney Thomas three pointer. Continuing the strategy of fouling Miles proved effective as Miles continued to struggle at the line. Imani Williams split a pair of free throws for Miles with 15 seconds remaining to make it a 73-69 game. Naja Fenelon then drilled a three pointer for KSU with four seconds remaining to make it 73-72 game, with the tide squarely on the side of the Thorobrettes. But unfortunately time was not.

Greer connected on both free throws after being fouled and KSU couldn’t get a shot off in the final second having to go the length of the floor due to all timeouts being exhausted.

Afterward Greer spoke with Symone Stanley about her career high in the biggest game of her career for Miles College.

“I don’t even have any words, we just got it done. It took everybody. To hear the sidelines cheer me on, got me going. I just knew that the team feeds off my energy. But 33 points I have to clap it up for myself one time. But it took the whole team,” Greer said.

Miles is now 23-6 and awaits its place in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
