Bowie State edges Livingstone in another CIAA Tournament Thriller

Bowie State and Livingstone College have a history of hard fought CIAA Tournament games and the opening round of 2024 was no different.

BALTIMORE, MD — No. 4 Bowie State held No. 5 Livingstone (12-16) to just 13.3 percent from deep in a 2-for-15 shooting performance on the way to a 69-66 win over the Blue Bears of Livingstone at CFG Bank Arena Tuesday, Feb. 27 during the opening round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Bulldogs (12-16) had three players score in double figures, led by CIAA Food Lion MVP of the game Warren Mouganda, who had 17 points. Kevon Corley tacked on 15 points and Joel Webb notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Webb pulled down eight offensive rebounds which led the BSU offense which grabbed 14 boards and turned them into 17 second-chance points.

The Bulldogs’ defense held Livingstone to only 13.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 36.1 percent from the field.

How It Happened
After jumping out to a 29-24 advantage, BSU went on a 7-0 run with 1:29 left in the first half to increase its lead to 36-24, a score that would hold until halftime. The Bulldogs relied on its three-point shooting in the half, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 36 points.

BSU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mouganda’s jumper, to grow the lead to 57-50 with 5:43 to go in the contest. The Blue Bears narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still held on for the 69-66 win. BSU got a boost from its bench in the second half, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 33 total points.
