Don’t get comfortable: Women’s CIAA North play is among us and is equal parts exciting and unpredictable. Lincoln (PA) hosted fifth-ranked Virginia Union on Wednesday and got the upset win in a blowout, 76-46. Lincoln will keep first place of the division in Pennsylvania for the time being.
Four Lady Lions finished in double figures. Senior guards Kwanzaa Murray and DeAshia young led all scorers with 22 points each. Junior center Alisia Machado featured a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
The game tied twice in the first quarter before a quick 7-0 run pushed the Lady Lions ahead 17-10. Union fought back to end quarter trailing 21-17. LUPA and VUU opened the quarter exchanging baskets, but the pace changed. Young kicked off and fueled a 15-6 run in the last seven minutes to send the Lady Lions into the break with a double digit lead, 38-27.
The Lady Lions unleashed in every way after halftime. Back to back three-pointers ignited a 14-0 run midway through the third quarter and gave LUPA a daunting 34-point lead. VUU was held to six points and ended the quarter trailing 67-33. LUPA was outscored 13-9 in the fourth quarter but still had a 30-point advantage in the win, 76-46.
LUPA will travel all the way to Orangeburg, SC to face Claflin (0-18, 0-8, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM. They resume divisional play next week with two home games. Fifth seed Elizabeth City State (7-10, 3-4, 0-1) will visit on Monday at 5:30 PM, followed by second seed Bowie State (14-2, 4-1) next Saturday at 2 PM.
