Hampton basketball to play in Coach John McLendon Classic

Hampton’s first-post MEAC season isn’t quite in the books yet.

Hampton has accepted an invite to appear in the College Insider Tournament, according to the tournament’s website. The Big South school will take on St. Francis (Brooklyn) in the Coach John McLendon Classic. The game will take place at 7 PM on Thursday, March 21.

Ironically, McLendon coached at Hampton Institute between well-documented stops at North Carolina Central and Tennessee State in the mid 1950s.

The SWAC’s Texas Southern and Grambling State are the other HBCUs in the field. The tournament, first held in 2013, doesn’t give out any big payouts like the one the NCAA does. In fact, schools have to pay to play host to a game in the CIT. The cost has reportedly been as high as $38k for hosting a game.

The Pirates finished 16-17 during their first season in the Big South.
