Elizabeth City State (3-1) isn’t at the forefront of a lot of conversations about CIAA Championship contenders. Especially in the Northern Division. But Saturday the Vikings gained some mojo pushing their record to 3-1 after beating Johnson C. Smith (0-4) in a tight contest at home, 20-17. The Vikings have now won two in a row after a tough 66-14 loss two weeks ago to UNC Pembroke.

ECSU jumped out to a 14-0 lead with two first-quarter scores before Johnson C. Smith came alive. The Golden Bulls scored a touchdown with a two-point conversion plus a field goal to narrow the lead down to 14-11 at the half. JCSU scored first in the third when Terrance Ervin found Desmond Dozier for a 38-yard touchdown pass to take the lead at 17-14.
Neal would answer on the next drive, hitting Chase Byrum for a 26-yard touchdown. ECSU captured the lead back at 20-17 and neither team would score again the rest of the way.
Elizabeth City travels to Shaw next weekend, while Johnson C. Smith hosts Chowan.
