Southern University co-hosts Emergency Care in Athletic course

BATON ROGUE, La. —  Southern University, a member institution of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), will be teaming up with Louisiana State University (LSU) in co-hosting the 2017 Emergency Care in Athletic course at LSU Tiger Stadium on the Southern Stadium Club of LSU’s campus on Saturday, July 8, beginning with registration and breakfast at 7 a.m.

The course will offer a wide spectrum on emergency protocols and evaluations that may occur during the course of an athletic event. 

Topics covered include emergency evaluations, exertional illness, emergency airwave and oxygen administration, general medical emergencies, hemorrhage control, EHI: cold water immersion/rectal thermometer, anaphylaxis and asthma, airway/oxygen management, tourniquet application, hemostatic agents. 

Afternoon topics will focus instruction on head injuries, cardiac conditions, injuries to the spin, multi-person lift supine as well as the proper helmet and shoulder pad removal. 

The course will work in conjunction with the Baton Rouge General Medical Center and Louisiana State University’s School of Kinesiology in realizing the goal of continuing medical education credits.

Upon completion of this course attendees will receive continuing education certificates via email.
