Alabama A&M was victorious over SWAC East rival Mississippi Valley State last Saturday 35-16. AAMU quarterback De’Angelo “Tuttie” Ballard had a solid game against the Delta Devils throwing for 140 yards with a touchdown and rushing for 78 yards with two touchdowns. AAMU defense also got into the scoring as well as defensive lineman Ryan Ducksworth returned a fumble for another score to close the game out. Prairie View A&M was shutout by Texas A&M last Saturday 67-0. It was a “money game” so what did you expect? Now PVAM can look to assert itself as being the top team in the SWAC West predicted to go to the SWAC Championship in December. What comes down in this matchup is the quarterback play from Green and Ballard. Our money is on Green.
If you’re looking for a great matchup this week between two sleeper teams in the SWAC you found
it! Alabama State is coming off a tough loss to Alcorn State due to kicker Trevor Vincent’s field goal being blocked with 18 seconds left on the clock. ASU running back Khalid Thomas went out the game with an ankle injury and did not return. If Thomas is missing some time this season, this game it will be hard for the Hornets to put points on the board in this game. Southern was dominated by Tulane 66-21 in a non-conference matchup, where Tulane had 449 yards on total offense with mainly of those yards coming from rushing the ball with 437. Southern quarterback Austin Howard was 16-for-27 with 267 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Southern receiver Willie Quinn had seven catches for 129 yards with a touchdown. SU returns home and the Jaguars will roll against the Hornets.
Grambling State came up short against the University of Arizona 31-21 last Saturday in Tuscon. GSU leading the game 21-3 at halftime, but quarterback Devante Kincade went out with an ankle injury and GSU fell apart. Backup quarterback Trevon Cherry came into the game and threw three interceptions as the Wildcats countered those turnovers into points. GSU receiver Chad Williams had a coming out party with catching 13 passes for 152 yards in his season debut.
Texas Southern was defeated by Houston Baptist 24-20 last week at Husky Stadium. TxSo quarterback Averion Hurts was 14-for-33 for 143 yards with a touchdown in the loss. Mississippi Valley State lost their home opener against Alabama A&M 35-16. The Delta Devils defense allowed 194 yards on the ground to the Bulldogs, and allowed the game to slip away where the offense did not score at all in the second half. MSVS quarterback Austin Bray was 20-36 for 223 yards with a touchdown. In this game, both teams need to figure out their “identity” on offense because both teams have not figured that out so far into the season.
