Derrick Griffin and Texas Southern took home (almost) all the SWAC trophies

Derrick Griffin’s first season in the SWAC was a big success. The Texas Southern center was named SWAC Player of The Year, Defensive Player of The Year and Newcomer of The Year on Monday.

The two-sport star (he led the SWAC with 11 touchdown catches) averaged 13.5 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, breaking the conference’s record for consecutive double-doubles and setting the season mark as well. He also blocked 2.3 shots per game.

The honors didn’t stop there for Texas Southern. Mike Davis was named Coach of The Year, while Chris Thomas (first team) and Malcolm Riley (second team) joined Griffin on the All-SWAC squads.
