Winston-Salem State’s Phillip Sims gets tryout with Arizona Cardinals

After playing for three schools in five seasons, Phillip Sims is hoping he has found an NFL home. The former five-star recruit, who ended his college career with Winston-Salem State will get a chance to try out with the Arizona Cardinals.

“I’m grateful and appreciative for the opportunity that the Cardinals coaching staff and organization has given me,” Sims told HBCU Gameday. “And I will make the most of it.”

Sims was the top rated pocket passer coming out of Chesapeake, VA in 2011. He began his career at Alabama, where he redshirted and ultimately transferred. He spent one season at UVA before becoming ineligible. After sitting out the 2013 season he helped lead Winston-Salem State to a 9-2 record while splitting time at quarterback.

Sims completed just under 60 percent of his passes, throwing 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions at WSSU in 2014.
