Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 24, 2015) — Both of Raleigh’s CIAA squads will live to see another day at the 2015 Tournament. St. Augustine’s beat Elizabeth City State 61-54 and Shaw held off Virginia Union 77-70 in the finale of Day One.
St. Aug led 29-25 at halftime, and stretched that lead to 36-26 on a Marquise Hines putback with 16:30 remaining.
ECSU managed to cut the lead to 45-42 before Anthony Gaskins put St. Aug on his back, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to give his team a 51-42 lead with just over five minutes remaining to come away with the win.
Shaw took advantage of a slow start by Virginia Union to take a 28-20 halftime lead. They managed to hold off a late VUU rally. Larry Richardson scored a game-high 29 points for Shaw, while Ray Anderson finished with 22 points for VUU.
St. Aug would hold on for the win, and will face Chowan in the second round on Wednesday. Shaw will face Johnson C. Smith in the night cap of Day Two.
