Tenn. State, BCU Ranked In FCS Coaches Preseason Poll

The FCS Coaches Poll is out, and the two HBCUs that made the list are no surprise. Tennessee State and Bethune-Cookman are the representatives of Black College Football on the list.

Tennessee State was the top-ranked HBCU at no. 17. TSU went 10-4 last season, earning and at-large bid out of the Ohio Valley Conference. Their 31-0 first round when over Butler was the first by an HBCU in the FCS playoffs this millennium. They lost stars in tight end AC Leonard and guard Kadeem Edwards, but still have plenty of talent coming back, headlined by quarterback Michael German.

Bethune-Cookman also had an impressive 2013 season, becoming MEAC co-champs (solo or shared) while going 10-2. BCU was predicted to win the MEAC at the conference’s media day last month.

No team from the SWAC ranked in the Top 25. Alcorn State and Alabama State both received votes, as well as MEAC member South Carolina State.
