While Texas Southen and North Carolina Central prepare for college basketball’s big show, another HBCU is already navigating the NCAA Tournament waters. Tuskegee is heading to the D2 South Region Finals after upsetting North Alabama 93-87 in overtime on Sunday.
The Golden Tigers, seeded No. 8 in the tournament, eliminated North Alabama 93-87 behind 22 points from Richard Dixon, one of six Tuskegee players in double figures.
Tuskegee, coached by former University of Alabama great Leon Douglas, will meet regular-season Gulf South Conference champ Delta State in Tuesday’s finals at 6 p.m. (CDT). Delta eliminated St. Leo in Sunday’s other semifinal game, 70-61.
North Alabama, which had won 13 of its last 14 games, including a three-game run through the GSC tournament, ends its season at 23-9.
The SIAC Champions entered the tournament the eighth seed in the region, and took out host Florida Southern on Saturday night. TU will play Delta State on Tuesday for the South Region title.
