After guiding the school to arguably its most successful period overall in athletics, William “Bill” Hayes is apparently out as athletic director at Winston-Salem State. A source told HBCU Gameday on Monday evening they expect Hayes to be on his way out.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js WSSU sports information director Kevin Manns told the Winston-Salem Journal that Hayes, who has been on vacation, is still in charge.

“I have no knowledge of anything else going on,” Manns said by telephone Sunday night. “Bill Hayes is still the AD here.”

This news comes a little less than three months after football coach Conell Maynor departed for Hampton. The school has multiple CIAA championships in football, basketball and baseball. WSSU became the first HBCU to appear in the Division II national title game

This is Hayes’ second stint with the school which he helped turn into a football powerhouse in the 70s and 80s.

Update: The Winston-Salem Journal reports Tonia Walker is now acting AD at WSSU.
