Less than three months after the fight that cancelled the CIAA Football Championship Game, Virgina State University has released its report of what happened on Nov. 15. Per the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the university says that trash talking led to a one-on-one fight involving WSSU quarterback Rudy Johnson and VSU running back Lamont Britt.
A report by Washington-based attorney Robert Clayton also says the fight that injured Winston-Salem State University’s starting quarterback in the bathroom during the championship luncheon was spontaneous with no premeditation.
The report says eight VSU football players were in the vicinity of the bathroom when the fight broke out, as were one or two WSSU players. In sworn affidavits from seven of the VSU students, with names redacted, the athletes recount a scene of innocent trash talking just before the fight.
The students describe lighthearted bantering and laughing immediately before a VSU player struck WSSU quarterback Rudy Johnson in the face with a closed fist.
The report also stated Britt was suspended for a semester.
