Southern may have captured the nation’s attention with its performance in the NCAA Tournament, but it still has a few people to win over in the SWAC. The SWAC predicted finish was announced Wednesday morning, and Texas Southern was picked to win the conference. TSU, the 2013 regular season champ, finished with 170 votes, three more than conference tournament champion Southern.
Texas Southern finished 17-14 last season, going 16-2 in the SWAC and winning its last 12 games. The Tigers never got a chance to see how far they could have gone, however, as APR restrictions kept TSU from participating in post-season play. Preseason all-conference picks Ray Penn and Aaron Clayborn will return for second-year coach Mike Davis.
Southern finished 23-9 last season, including a 15-3 mark in conference play. The Jags won the conference tournament and almost became the first no. 16 seed to beat a no. 1 seed as they ultimately fell short against Gonzaga. They return preseason Player of The Year Malcolm Miller and preseason all-conference pick Javan Mitchell.
