Prairie View-Alabama State: SWAC Shootout In The Making

Alabama State’s Isaiah Crowell is one of 20 candidates for the Walter Payton Award.

Prairie View (4-2) at Alabama State (4-2)

Another week, another big SWAC East/West game. Both teams enter this contest 4-2 overall with one SWAC loss in their respective divisions.

Offensive Fireworks: Alabama State and Prairie View are the top two scoring offenses in the SWAC, as both come into the game averaging better than 35 points per game. ASU prefers the run as its main weapon, which makes sense with Isaiah Crowell in the backfield. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Duhart has shown he can get it done through the air as well. For Prairie View, it starts with its electrifying passing game, led by junior Jerry Lovelocke. The Panthers can also move the ball on the ground, as Courtney Brown is second in rushing to Crowell.

Streets Is Twatching

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js Which Defensive Unit Will Step Up: Both of these teams have been in shootouts this season, so its very likely both offenses will put up big numbers. Prairie View ranks dead last in the SWAC in pass defense, allowing over 300 yards per game, though it does rank third in interceptions. In a game with two potent offenses like this one, a big defensive play or score could really shift momentum either way.

Prediction: If Saturday’s game holds to form, we could be looking at a good, old-fashioned SWAC shootout. As with the Jackson State-Southern game, I’m going with Alabama State simply because they are the better all-around team in terms off offense and defense. Either way, this one should be fun to watch.
