This just in: Virginia State is for real. Especially its defense. Just ask Shaw. VSU’s offense scored two first-half touchodwns, its defense shut Shaw down, and the result was a 14-10 win for the Trojans.
Virginia State came into Saturday’s game with a two game winning streak, having given up only 19 points in those two wins. Shaw came into the contest on a two-game skid after winning its first two games.
Va. State is now 2-0 in the state of North Carolina. The CIAA Championship game will be held in Winston-Salem, NC.

Quarterback Justin Thorpe had a big half, hitting Javion Smallwood for a 32 yard touchdown pass and running for a 20 yard touchdown of his own. Thorpe’s touchdown run gave VSU a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
“I was extremely proud of these guys to come out and score on those two drives to give us some points,” Virginia State coach Latrell Scott said.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js VSU’s offense wouldn’t score again, but thanks to a ball hawking defense, it didn’t need to. Shaw passed for just 94 yards, and was just 2 of 11 on third down attempts. The Bears managed to score 10 points in the second half, but none of them came via the offense. Darnell Evans 15 yard fumble recovery was the lone touchdown of the day for Shaw.
Thorpe completed 27 of his 34 passes for 211 yards.
The win improved Virginia State’s record to 4-1 overall, keeping them perfect in CIAA play and matching last season’s win total just halfway through its season. Shaw (2-3) dropped its third game in a row, and is now 1-2 in the CIAA.
