JSU vs. UAPB Preview: Lions In Desperation Mode

Heading into the season, this game looked like a possible preview of the SWAC Championship Game in Houston. While Jackson State (3-2) has pretty much been as good as advertised, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-5) is in full-out desperation mode five games into the season.

UAPB heads to Jackson winless, facing a Jackson State team that looks like it just may wear the crown that UAPB claimed as SWAC champs last season. The Tigers have already beaten Alabama State and Southern, both of whom were predicted to finish near the top of their divisions. A win over UAPB just might help JSU cruise to the regular season title the rest of the way.

Part of the problem for UAPB has been its inability to keep quarterback Ben Anderson upright. The Golden Lions have given up 14 sacks in four games, and sacks are notorious drive killers. They will have their hands full against the Tigers, who rank second in the SWAC in sacks. UAPB’s offensive line will have to come correct against JSU.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsPrediction: UAPB just isn’t the same team that took the SWAC by storm last year. This team is missing playmakers like Justin Billings and Ryan Shaw, as well as New Orleans Saints rookie Taron Armstead. Other than the second and third quarters of the Alabama State game, UAPB hasn’t shown any reason to believe it will upset Jackson State at home.
