Latrell Scott has only been at the helm of Virginia State a little over six months, but his experience at the Division I level is already starting to pay dividends. Former James Madison quarterback Justin Thorpe will transfer to VSU, according to Matthew Stoss of the Harrison Daily News-Record. Thorpe was granted a sixth-year of eligiblity by the NCAA last year.

Thorpe is the second former JMU player to transfer to follow Scott to Virginia State since this spring. Running back Jordan Anderson will join the Trojans 2012, and be reunited with Chris Malone, former JMU offensive line coach. Scott coached tight ends at JMU during 2012 before taking over at VSU.
Thorpe started nine games in 2012, throwing for over 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also ran for more than 600 yards and 10 touchdowns for JMU, which finished 7-4.
Even thought Thorpe struggled at times last season, at one point losing the starting job to a freshman, he looks to be the most viable option at starting quarterback for 2013. VSU has some offensive weapons in sophomores Kenny Britt and Javion Smallwood, and this only makes them more dangerous. While rebuilding this team will take some time, if Thorpe pans out, the Trojans could inch themselves into contention for a CIAA Northern Division title this season.
