Loss of "Ziggy" Leaves WSSU With Hole In Middle

Michel-Ofik Nzege will transfer from Winston-Salem State to pursue a Division I scholarship.

It was good while it lasted, but big man Michel-Ofik Nzege is a Ram no more. The Winston-Salem Journal’s John Dell reports that Nzege is leaving Winston-Salem State and hoping to transfer to a Division I school.

Needless to say, this is a big blow for WSSU. Coming off their third straight NCAA Tournament apperance, the Rams were already slated to lose seven seniors, including three starters. Nzege was to be an intregal part of the team’s effort to maintain WSSU’s status among the CIAA elite Like all freshmen, Nzege had his up-and-down moments, but he also had the highest ceiling of any player on the court all season. Just check him out in this late season matchup against Shaw.

WSSU head coach Bobby Collins really has his work cut out for him now. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of quality big man he can add to the roster at this point in the offseason. Could be a long year for the Rams as they attempt to make the playoffs for the fourth straight season while replacing four starters.
