After a coaching search that began late in the 2013 season, it looks like Florida A&M is close to choosing a head coach and moving its program forward. And it looks like that help may come in the form of some familiar faces.
Football Scoop is reporting that interim head coach Earl Holmes will be named the Rattlers’ next head coach later this week. The 10-year NFL veteran took over the team for the final two games last season after head coach Joe Taylor abruptly retired. FAMU went 1-1 in those games.
Football Scoop is also reporting that former FAMU quarterback Quinn Gray will be named offensive coordinator. The former NFL backup has served as quarterbacks coach since 2011.
Holmes was listed as one of three finalist for the position by the university earlier this month. The others were former Rattler John Eason and John Hendrick.
FAMU has not released a statement concerning the coaching position as of yet. If this hire holds, I like it. Having alumni in the coaching ranks means the program doesn’t have to worry about a coach having to adjust to its culture. And having two former pros heading the offense and the defense may help attract recruits.
This is definitely the safe hire. Time will tell if it is the right one.
