HBCU great Bruce Eugene is back at Grambling State, this time with a headset to guide the Tigers’ passing attack.
Grambling State announced Monday that Eugene has joined Mickey Joseph’s staff as quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator. The move returns an FCS passing legend to the program where he became a household name.
“Bruce is a special addition to our coaching staff because he understands what it means to be a quarterback at Grambling State,” Joseph said in a statement. “He has been in that position, he has had tremendous success at this level, and he understands the expectations that come with playing quarterback at Grambling.”
Eugene starred for Grambling State from 2001 through 2005. The New Orleans native won SWAC Offensive Player of the Year twice. He was also a three-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award.
His biggest season came in 2005. Eugene threw for 4,360 yards and 56 touchdowns while tossing only six interceptions. Grambling finished 11-1 and captured the SWAC championship that year. He ended his college career with 140 touchdown passes, placing him among the most prolific quarterbacks in FCS history.
Bruce Eugene brings coaching experience home
The return is more than a ceremonial HBCU homecoming. Bruce Eugene has spent years developing quarterbacks and building programs at both the college and high school levels.
He began his college coaching career at Alcorn State in 2011. Eugene worked as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under former Grambling State head coach Melvin Spears. He later built an impressive résumé in New York City.
In 2015, Eugene led Grand Street Campus in Brooklyn to a 13-0 record and a Public Schools Athletic League championship. The victory made him the first Black head coach to win a title in New York City’s highest division. The New York Jets also named Eugene its High School Coach of the Year.
Eugene later coached at Locust Grove High School in Georgia and helped the program capture its first region championship. He most recently worked as a scouting assistant at Syracuse after joining the program in January.
Now Bruce Eugene returns to Grambling State with knowledge gained from playing under Doug Williams and Spears. His first game on the Tigers’ staff comes Aug. 29. Grambling opens the 2026 season at home against Clark Atlanta, another HBCU program.
For a school built around legendary quarterbacks, bringing one of its greatest passers home feels like a natural fit.
