HBCU star signs Krispy Kreme NIL deal

Have you ever had a hot Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut? It melts in your mouth and probably sends a less-than-optimal amount of sugar directly into your bloodstream. But the taste can’t be denied. The Charlotte, NC-based company now has a sweet deal with HBCU running back Kelvin Dean of FAMU through its Tallahassee chains.

The Celebration Bowl offensive MVP announced the deal via his social media on Thursday letting the world know about the “Dean Dozen.” We’re obviously a sucker for doughnut promotions so here are the details. Customers can receive an original glazed dozen for just $10.49 when ordering a “Dean Dozen” at any Krispy Kreme Tallahassee location.

Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed but the optics are great for an HBCU athlete. The pairing of an iconic brand with a FAMU football player shows that all is not lost with the possibilities of HBCU programs competing in the name, image, and likeness era of college football. Granted it’s not the same scope as Shedeur Sanders or Carson Beck, but a deal it is nonetheless.

According to Dean, the partnership will last until at least the end of 2024, running through New Year’s Eve. Last season Dean won the MVP in FAMU’s victory over Howard after picking up 97 total yards and two touchdowns.

Throughout the season he rushed for 376 yards and three touchdowns. Through the air, he had 11 receptions and three more touchdowns. He had a career-high 83 rushing yards against Texas Southern.

SWAC Medie Day, Kelvin Dean, FAMU HBCU
Kelvin Dean has a NIL deal centered around a promotion on doughnuts at Krispy Kreme.

FAMU has been a good fit for Dean after transferring from Florida Atlantic University where he played sparingly. Dean has been a big believer in what FAMU has offered him in terms of extending his playing career. He has a pinned post on his X account from May 19, 2023, that reads, “I will make it to the NFL from FAMU.”

Dean will make his season debut for the Rattlers on August 24, when FAMU takes on Norfolk State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.
